Empowering Communities with Purple Alert

In an age where technology bridges gaps and connects communities, the Purple Alert app stands as a testament to the power of digital innovation in serving humanity's most pressing needs. Developed with compassion at its core, Purple Alert is designed to assist individuals living with dementia—a condition that profoundly impacts lives across Scotland and the UK.

Understanding Dementia: A Growing Concern

Dementia, a collective term for conditions affecting brain function, is a reality for many families across Scotland and the wider UK. It's more than just a medical condition; it's a societal challenge that affects memory, problem-solving, and the ability to perform everyday activities, leading to increased vulnerability, including the risk of going missing.

In Scotland alone, tens of thousands of individuals live with dementia, a number mirrored and magnified across the UK. The journey with dementia is unique for each individual and their carers, marked by challenges that demand resilience, understanding, and support from the wider community.

Purple Alert: A Community's Response

Recognizing the urgent need for a support system for those living with dementia and their carers, the Purple Alert app was conceived by Alzheimer Scotland. This innovative app serves a dual purpose: it provides peace of mind for carers and a safety net for individuals with dementia.

How It Works

At the heart of Purple Alert is the ability for carers to create a profile for people in their care in keeping with the well established Herbert Protocol. Carers can then issue an alert when a person with dementia goes missing. This alert is then broadcasted to other app users in the vicinity, creating a community-wide search effort. It leverages the collective vigilance of the community, turning every user into a lookout, ready to offer assistance.

More Than Just an App**

But Purple Alert is more than a technological solution; it's a movement towards greater empathy and understanding. By engaging the community in the well-being of its most vulnerable members, the app fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility. It not only aids in the immediate recovery of missing individuals but also raises awareness about dementia and its impacts on both individuals and their families.

How Add Jam helped

Add Jam were instrumental in the design and development of Purple Alert. The app is a cross platform React Native app available on both iOS and Android and the backend for Purple Alert is a Ruby on Rails app with a json api and a admin console for Alzheimer Scotland to run the app day to day successfully.

In bridging the gap between technology and compassionate care, Purple Alert illuminates the path forward in addressing the challenges posed by dementia. It exemplifies how innovation, when guided by empathy and understanding, can transform lives, offering hope and support to those navigating the complexities of dementia in Scotland and beyond.

Add Jam were pivotal to the success of Purple Alert. They interpreted the brief perfectly, and delivered on time and on budget. From the initial scoping to design and delivery, Add Jam provided effective solutions to problems and contributed to an inspiring vision for the future of Purple Alert.
