In an era where 63% of UK adults don't meet recommended physical activity levels, we're excited to announce a major update to One Walk A Day - our popular walking companion app that's helping thousands build healthier habits through daily walks. This release transforms the app into an even more powerful ally in your journey to better health, introducing features that make tracking and maintaining your walking routine more engaging and accessible than ever.
What's new in One Walk A Day?
We initially launched this new version of One Walk A Day in August 2024 at the time we shared how we had taken a COVID era prototype and turned it into a fully featured habit forming walking app. The reception to the new app has been phenomenal so we've been working hard to add more functionality, incorporate user feedback and leverage some of the native features of your iPhone. So let's break this app update down into the key features:
Home screen widgets: Your motivation at a glance
We understand that building healthy habits requires constant motivation. That's why we've brought your walking progress right to your iPhone's home screen with our new widgets.
These beautifully designed companions keep you connected to your goals throughout the day, showing your current streak and daily progress without ever needing to open the app. It's like having a gentle reminder and cheerleader right on your home screen.
Live activities: Your walking companion on the lock screen
Walking should be about enjoying the outdoors, not constantly checking your phone. Our new Live Activities integration brings your walk statistics right to your lock screen and Dynamic Island (on iPhone 14 Pro and later).
Now you can glance at your progress, distance, and duration without breaking your stride or unlocking your device. It's perfect for those moments when you want to check if you've hit your daily goal while keeping your phone tucked away.
Fun walking facts: Making every walk more engaging
Numbers alone don't tell the whole story of your achievement. Our new fun facts feature adds context and excitement to your walks by comparing them to real-world landmarks and achievements. Imagine finishing your morning walk and discovering you've covered the equivalent of 1.4 times the length of the Golden Gate Bridge!
These engaging comparisons make each walk more memorable and shareable with friends and family. If you're a Star Wars fan like me we've snuck in a few Star Wars facts too.
Seamless health app integration
Your fitness journey doesn't exist in isolation, and neither should your walking data. We've completely revamped our Health app integration to create a more connected experience. Whether you're tracking a walk directly in our app, recording a workout on your Apple Watch, or using another fitness app, all your walking activities can now be consolidated in One Walk A Day via Apple HealthKit.
This means every step counts, no matter how you choose to record it.
Thoughtful design touches
The best apps don't just work well - they delight.
We've carefully crafted several new features to make your daily walking experience more enjoyable. Current weather conditions are now displayed to help you avoid getting caught in the rain (a feature inspired by the weather in Glasgow). You can personalise your experience with custom app icons and themes, and we've ensured everything looks perfect in dark mode.
For those building a new habit, you can set up daily walk reminders that gently nudge you toward your goals.
Why walking matters
Recent NHS research has revealed just how transformative regular walking can be for our health. Even modest increases in daily steps can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke while improving mental health and reducing anxiety. Beyond these clinical benefits, regular walkers report better sleep quality and increased energy levels throughout their day.
The beauty of walking lies in its simplicity - no expensive equipment, no gym membership, and no lycra required. Whether you're taking your first steps toward fitness or maintaining an active lifestyle, walking provides an accessible foundation for better health. Studies show that even 5,000 steps a day can lead to meaningful health improvements, making it the perfect starting point for anyone's fitness journey.
Building healthy habits made simple
With our One Walk A Day project, our aim is right there in the name - to help people form lasting healthy habits through daily walks. We've thoughtfully designed the app to support your journey through consistent tracking with our widgets and live activities, achievable goals that grow with you, and engaging feedback that celebrates your progress. Our flexible integration means you can track your walks however you prefer, whether through our app, your Apple Watch, or other fitness apps.
Not just another fitness app
What sets One Walk A Day apart is our unwavering focus on sustainable habit formation. While many fitness apps overwhelm users with complex features and aggressive goals, we've focused on making daily walking accessible, enjoyable, and most importantly, sustainable. Each feature has been carefully considered to support your long-term success rather than short-term gains.
