Networking in the tech world isn't just a buzzword – it's a crucial part of your professional growth. Chance meetings at tech events can lead to job offers, collaborations, or even inspire your next big idea. Plus, it's an incredible way to stay on top of industry trends and learn new skills. In the fast-paced world of tech, your network can be your most valuable asset, keeping you informed, inspired, and connected to the pulse of innovation.

It's not just about learning new skills (though there's plenty of that). It's about rubbing shoulders with the brightest minds in tech, stumbling upon your next big career move, staying ahead of the curve, and maybe even finding the perfect partner for that world-changing startup idea you've been sitting on.

How to get involved

Convinced to get more active? We believe attending Meetups are your the best way to get started. They're the beating heart of our tech community, a perfect blend of learning, networking, and good old-fashioned socialising. Here are a few you shouldn't miss:

First up, we've got RookieOven. Founded by our very own Michael Hayes here at Add Jam, it's all about nurturing Glasgow's up-and-coming tech talent. If you're an aspiring entrepreneur or new to the tech scene, this is your jam. Expect to hear from founders who've been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. You'll get the lowdown on startup basics and plenty of chances to expand your network.

It's really informal and just a great chance to meet like minded people. Find out when the next meetup is on the RookieOven website.

From vanilla JS to the latest frameworks like React, Vite and Remix, they cover it all. The meetup is organised and ran by Jamie McHale who also runs the Scottish Technology Club Discord community.

If Edinburgh is more your thing Jamie also runs the EdinburghJS Meetup. Basically JavaScript in Scotland is well represented and backed by a great, active community.

TechMeetup

For a broader view of Glasgow's tech landscape, TechMeetup is your go-to. It's a really well attended meetup bringing together various aspects of software development, data science, design and general tech best practice in Glasgow. Expect dives and big-picture thinking from the speakers each month. Open Source Glasgow

A really strong contribution to the Glasgow community is Open Source Glasgow. This is where you go to scratch that itch to contribute to something bigger than yourself. It's not just about coding (though there's plenty of that); it's about the philosophy of open source and the power of community-driven development. You might walk in with the intention of improving your coding skills, but don't be surprised if you walk out with a whole new perspective on software development.

This community also offer free to attend sessions to teach basic server administration, command line usage, hosting basic services web servers as well as Mastodon or PeerTube and showcase some of the latest developments in open source.

Neil who runs this meetup also runs the excellent glasgow.social community. Sign up and get involved.

Glasgow Azure User Group

The Glasgow Azure User Group (GAUG) is an active group for users of the Azure platform. This meetup has been going for a few years now and brings together IT professionals, developers, architects, and enthusiasts from Glasgow and surrounding areas to explore the vast world of Microsoft Azure. With bi-monthly meetups, GAUG offers a platform for learning best practices, sharing insights, and networking with peers passionate about cloud technology.

Making the most of meetups

Now, attending a meetup for the first time can be a bit daunting. But remember, everyone's there for the same reason: to learn, connect, and geek out over tech. So don't be shy – strike up a conversation, even if it's just to ask someone what they thought of the talk.

Come armed with questions, whether for the speakers or your fellow attendees. It's a great ice-breaker and shows you're engaged. And don't forget to follow up with the people you meet. A quick connection on LinkedIn or X/Twitter can turn a one-off encounter into a valuable professional relationship.

Oh, and if you're feeling brave? Consider giving a talk yourself. Many meetups are always on the lookout for speakers, and there's no better way to establish yourself in the community than by sharing your knowledge.
