Financial literacy isn't just about understanding numbers—it's about empowering people to take control of their future. When Educational Intelligence (E.I) approached Add Jam with a stark statistic—12.9 million UK adults struggling with financial management—we knew this project would be more than just another web application.

Breaking down barriers

The challenge was clear: create a digital platform that could transform complex financial concepts into accessible, engaging learning experiences. E.I's vision for Money Matters aimed to bridge the gap between financial institutions, government bodies, and vulnerable communities who needed this knowledge most.

Often maths education is focused on the numbers and not the concepts and real life applications. We wanted to create an approachable and accessible platform that would help people understand the concepts and how they apply to their lives. The ability to add numbers together is worthless if you can't apply the skills to real world scenarios and decision making.

Building the foundation

Our journey began with a deep dive into how people learn about money. Working closely with E.I's subject matter experts, we designed an architecture that would embrace the latest technologies such as AI and support multiple learning styles and engagement methods. The result? A React-based web application that feels more like a personal financial mentor than a traditional sequential learning platform.

The technical journey

At the heart of Money Matters lies a powerful Ruby on Rails backend, orchestrating everything from user authentication to progress tracking. We built a content management system that gives E.I's team the flexibility to craft and update learning materials without technical intervention. The platform seamlessly delivers video lessons, interactive exercises, hints and learning feedback, all while maintaining robust security standards and following accessibility best practices.

The learning experience itself is where technology meets pedagogy. We developed components that transform passive learning into active engagement, progress tracking that motivates learners and a notification system that helps them stay on track.

A great learning experience

Understanding that financial education happens everywhere, we ensured Money Matters works flawlessly across devices. The platform's responsive design and progressive web app capabilities mean learners can access their materials whether they're at home, on their commute, or anywhere in between.

The Money Matters website works as a progressive web app and feels like a native app.

The platform's architecture supports thousands of concurrent users while maintaining performance and security. Integration with a GDPR compliant analytics platform helps E.I and their partners understand learning patterns and improve content continuously, creating a feedback loop that strengthens the platform's effectiveness.

The road ahead

Money Matters continues to evolve, with new features and content being added based on user feedback and changing financial landscapes. The scalable foundation we built ensures that as financial literacy needs change, the platform can adapt and grow.

Engineering for change

This project exemplifies what happens when technical expertise meets social purpose. By combining our experience in software development with some of the leading experts in education, psychology and AI we've created more than just another run of the mill learning platform—we've built a tool that's actively working to solve one of the UK's most pressing social challenges.
